Shahabad limestone for North American trade buyers
For distributors, hardscape yards and flooring dealers who want Indian limestone cut and finished at our quarry yard, sampled properly, and ordered with clear commercial paperwork.
Market
A limestone line that is not another sandstone story
North American buyers of imported stone already know Indian sandstone well. Shahabad limestone is a different material: a fine-grained limestone from north Karnataka used for generations as flooring and paving in India, offered here direct from the family quarry and polishing yard that cuts it. That distinction matters in sales conversations. You are not swapping one sandstone colour for another; you are introducing a limestone with its own density, bedding and finish behaviour.
Hardscape and patio work, covered outdoor living spaces, and interior floors are the usual entry points. Natural faces suit many outdoor pedestrian applications where texture helps underfoot; honed faces suit interiors and protected circulation; polished faces belong indoors on dry floors. Thicknesses of 20mm, 30mm, 40mm and 50mm are offered with ±1mm thickness tolerance, cut to order at our yard. Large sheets are possible subject to bed; smaller modules can be cut where your stock line or a job schedule needs them.
We sell direct. Production and finishing stay in India; international trade correspondence can run through our UK company. The commercial advantage is simple: fewer hands between the saw and your receiving dock, and a sample cut from current stock rather than a brochure photograph as the colour reference. We will not invent frost ratings, slip numbers or laboratory names to win an enquiry. Technical data is available on request for the bed and finish under discussion.
Dealers who already sell sandstone can introduce Shahabad as a limestone alternative for customers who want a quieter, finer grain and a different colour story — not as a substitute name for the same stone. Keep the geology honest on the ticket and the sample board; that is what builds repeat orders.
Specification
How US and Canadian trade language maps to the order
Expect mixed units in early conversations — square feet on the sales floor, millimetres on the factory ticket. Put both on the enquiry if it helps your team, but lock the purchase order to the millimetre sizes and thickness we will cut. Finish vocabulary also drifts: “cleft”, “natural”, “honed”, “gauged” and “calibrated” should each be defined by a sample and a written tolerance, not by habit from another stone type. If a project specification cites a test method or a product standard, name the document when you ask for data rather than asking for “the certificate” as a single object.
Colour families map cleanly for showroom work. Grey is the volume bed and the easiest bridge for customers used to grey limestone paving. Blue-grey reads cooler for contemporary interiors. Yellow is a warm character stone that darkens when wet — show both states. Reddish is a feature colour with tighter availability; discuss quantity before a multi-phase program. Related stone pages give fuller descriptions of each bed.
Ordering is sequential: enquiry with use and schedule, sample approval, quotation to your nearest port or delivered to your yard on request, written purchase order, then production, inspection, crating and documents. Packing lists should match crate marks so your warehouse can receive without opening every lid to identify contents. Phytosanitary treatment of timber crates and standard commercial shipping documents are part of the export sequence described elsewhere on this site — use those pages when you brief your freight forwarder.
If you are building a stock line rather than a single job, tell us the finishes and thicknesses you want to keep on the yard so samples and the first quote match how you will sell. A clear stock brief shortens the path from first container to a repeatable reorder.
Terminology
Words buyers use in this market
Hardscape / patio
External pedestrian stonework in North American trade language. Finish and outdoor exposure should drive the face chosen.
Cleft / natural
Usually the split face. Confirm against a Shahabad sample; do not assume it matches sandstone cleft from another quarry.
Honed / polished
Smoothed yard finishes. Polished is for dry interior floors in ordinary practice.
Gauged / calibrated
Buyer shorthand for controlled thickness. Ask for the numeric tolerance on the quote.
Square feet vs millimetres
Sell in the unit your market uses; order in the millimetre sizes we cut. Put both on early paperwork if needed.
Container / crate intake
Receiving against packing list and crate marks. Agree marking codes before stuffing if your WMS needs them.
