United Kingdom and Ireland
Shahabad limestone for UK and Irish trade buyers
A practical guide for merchants, landscapers and flooring contractors who want Indian limestone cut and finished at source, then shipped ready to lay — without buying through a chain of intermediaries you never meet.
Market
Why this market buys the way it does
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, natural stone for external paving and internal flooring is usually sold through merchants who already carry Indian sandstone, limestone from other origins, or porcelain lookalikes. The buyer language is practical rather than geological: people ask for colour, finish, thickness, pack size and whether the stone will sit happily on a British or Irish winter patio. Shahabad limestone fits that conversation because it is already a proven flooring and paving stone in India, yet it is far less familiar in these islands than sandstone — which is exactly why a merchant who can show a physical sample has something distinct to put in front of a client.
We sell direct from our own quarry and polishing yard in Kalaburagi district, Karnataka. Cutting, honing and polishing happen at our yard, so what leaves India is already sized and finished to the order rather than raw block for someone else to work. That matters to UK and Irish buyers who are used to opening a crate and laying, not remachining. Our sales and samples office is in Cardiff, which gives a UK company contact for samples, quotations and paperwork without changing where the stone is produced.
Most enquiries that work well start with a clear use: external paving, terrace, courtyard, hallway, commercial circulation or feature floor. Once the use is fixed, finish and thickness follow naturally. Natural (the split face) is the usual choice outdoors; honed is the usual choice indoors. Polished faces belong on dry internal floors only. We do not ask you to take a photograph as a colour reference on its own — a physical sample from current stock is how colour and finish should be signed off before a purchase order is placed.
Specification
What to confirm before you commit
UK and Irish specifications often name a finish loosely — “riven”, “honed”, “calibrated” — without tying those words to a sample. Agree the finish against a piece you can hold, then write the same wording onto the quote and the purchase order. Thickness is next: we cut 20mm, 30mm, 40mm and 50mm with a stated thickness tolerance of ±1mm, and the thickness must match the bedding and jointing build-up your installer intends to use. Size schedules vary; we cut a wide range at the yard, including large sheets where the bed allows, so send the schedule rather than assuming a stock module.
Technical properties for this material are available on request. We do not publish test figures on this site, and we do not invent certificates for marketing. If a project specification asks for particular properties, say so when you enquire and we will tell you what documentation can be provided for the bed and finish under discussion. Frost and wet slip are the two questions that dominate external work in these climates; both depend on the specific finish and exposure, so treat general claims from any supplier with caution until they are tied to the stone you are actually buying.
Colour banding and batch continuity matter on larger jobs. Shahabad Grey is the volume bed and the closest match to grey limestone many merchants already stock. Shahabad Blue reads cooler; Shahabad Yellow warms and deepens when wet, so show wet and dry samples before a client signs off a terrace colour. Shahabad Reddish is distinctive and less common — confirm quantity early if you need continuity across phases. Related stone pages on this site set out each bed in more detail.
Terminology
Words buyers use in this market
Natural / riven / cleft
In UK trade talk these usually mean the split face of the bed. Confirm against a sample; do not treat the words as interchangeable across suppliers.
Honed
An even matt face produced at the yard. Typical for internal floors and covered areas; not assumed for wet external paving without project-specific thought.
Calibrated
Buyers often mean thickness held to a tight tolerance for thin-bed fixing. Ask for the tolerance written on the quote, not only the word.
Patio / paving / flooring
Patio and paving are external horizontal work; flooring is usually internal. The same stone may suit both with different finishes.
Merchant pack / crate
How the stone arrives for yard stock or site delivery. Contents are listed on the packing list and marked on the crate.
Sample approval
The physical piece you approve becomes the reference for colour and finish before production is scheduled.
